"Steve has an eye, a point of view, a recognizable je ne sais quoi apparent even in what would be in the hands of a lesser talent, a hackneyed land or seascape.  Avedon used to pretend to be a primitive.  He used to say that if you scratch a surface and you are lucky you will find another surface.  Steve shoots surfaces, as do all photographers, and he shoots surfaces that are not unfamiliar to us.  But underneath the image he captures an un-sappy message.  Even when you do not quite know what the message is, you are aware that there is one.  Many of his images demand more than passing attention—especially when he shoots for himself...."  R.
